Alexander married on 3 May 1900 in Arolsen, Princess Elisabeth of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1873–1961), seventh child and youngest daughter of George Victor, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and Princess Helena of Nassau. They had four children, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and nineteen great-great-grandchildren:
Early life. Pauline was born in Arolsen, Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont on 19 October 1855 and was the second-eldest child and daughter of George Victor, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and his first wife Princess Helena of Nassau.

George Victor werd al op 14-jarige leeftijd vorst van Waldeck-Pyrmont na de dood van zijn vader in 1845. Vanwege zijn minderjarigheid nam zijn moeder tot 1852 de regering waar. Op 14 januari van dat jaar werd hij meerderjarig, maar hij weigerde de regering te aanvaarden zolang de democratische constitutie van 1849 nog van kracht was.
George Victor (14 January 1831 – 12 May 1893) was the 3rd sovereign Prince of the German state of Waldeck and Pyrmont. He was born in Arolsen the son of George II, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and his wife Princess Emma of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym.
