History of American service rifles from 1873-2023. It all started with the Model 1873, the first standard issue breech loading rifle. The Model 1873 was chambered in .47-70-405. The rifle was adopted in 1873 and was still used during the American-Spanish war. In 1892 the rifle was getting replaced by the Springfield Model 1892.
The original insignia used for infantry by the U.S. Army was not the familiar crossed rifles but the hunting horn. This was borrowed from the European armies, where it was used as an insignia for light infantry or rifle units. Those troops were often recruited from huntsmen and the horn was symbolic of the hunt.
The 3d Cavalry Group was the first unit of the 3rd U.S. Army to reach the Meuse and Moselle Rivers and to enter Germany. Upon returning to the United States, the 3d Cavalry Group was stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland. On 5 November 1948, the 3d Cavalry Group (Mechanized) was redesignated as the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment.
