The Broken Column in 1944 was painted shortly after the operation and sees the artist standing in the middle of a barren, cracked landscape. Her torso is encased in metal belts lined with fabric to help her body from collapsing, which is emphasized by her exposed spine cracking in several places.
The Broken Column The artist's biographer, Hayden Herrera, writes of this painting, 'A gap resembling an earthquake fissure splits her in two. The opened body suggests surgery and Frida's feeling that without the steel corset she would literally fall apart'.

Detection and measurement of pain in our patients is often shockingly deficient and unsystematic, and the problem is compounded by routine undertreatment.

Her spinal column was replaced with a cracked and damaged Ionic column, the most slender and delicate of the Greek order of columns. Although torn apart at the center, her body stands upright, held together with a surgical brace.
