[U.S.]—died Aug. 16, 1825, Charleston) was an American soldier, statesman, and diplomat who participated in the XYZ Affair, an unsavory diplomatic incident with France in 1798. Pinckney entered public service in 1769 as a member of the South Carolina Assembly.
