He, along with Miguel Angel de Quevedo, was responsible for the Buen Tono church which dominates the western side of the plaza even to this day. But the fact is, already by Pugibet’s time, at the end of the 19th century, the plaza had been a designated tianguis-marketplace since the 16th century.
Originally a temporary marketplace for vendors displaced by a 1933 reorganization of city marketplaces, this site used to be a warehouse for the Buen Tono cigar factory. The Buen Tono church just around the corner on the Plaza de San Juan is all that remains of that once very important local manufacturer.

Preciosa Sangre de Cristo is the Church of the Precious Blood of Christ. In Cuautepec, it’s the oldest church in this northern valley and worth a trip. Construction on the church building finished in 1767. The façade is adorned with five niches finished in the shapes of shells, are carved from quarried stone.
