Mark Phillips trat im Dezember 1980 als Offizierskadett der Guyana Defence Force bei und absolvierte eine Ausbildung an der renommierten Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Danach in Brasilien ausgebildet, diente er als Special Forces Officer und war Fallschirmspringer.
