Hohenheim has an ancient relationship with Father the archvillain, and his powerful alchemy is second to none. He is also the father of Ed and Al, though he's hardly a homemaker. Indeed, he's a loner and a rogue, and Ed doesn't seem to like him all that much.
Theory/Analysis. Alright alright, I know why Van Hohenheim. He's named after Theophrastus Phillippus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim, a real life doctor, alchemist and scientist, known as the father of toxicology. Generally important dude, makes sense to name a main character after him. Other characters are named after real-life stuff.
