In 1976, Campbell rejoined Petty to begin Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with former Mudcrutch member Benmont Tench (keyboards) along with Ron Blair (bass guitar) and Stan Lynch (drums). Like the other Heartbreakers, Campbell avoids the virtuoso approach to playing, preferring to have his work serve the needs of each song.
Tom Petty has received numerous awards for his musical abilities. UCLA presented Petty with the Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement in 1996. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and in 2002, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
