Also known as Lord Haddo from 1791 to 1801, he was a politician who served as British Prime Minister from 1852 until 1855. George Gordon, Lord Haddo (28 January 1764 – 2 October 1791 of a fall from his horse at Gight Castle), who was the father of Prime Minister George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, two other sons, and three daughters. Hon. William Gordon (c. 1765 – 19 March 1845) Built Rudding Park House 1805–1824.

  5. His paternal grandfather, also George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th earl of Aberdeen (1784–1860), was a leading Peelite conservative and prime minister (1852–5). Campbell liked to recall that one of his maternal ancestors had been a covenanting martyr while a paternal ancestor was executed for royalism; he saw this blended ancestry as symbolising his mission of national reconciliation.

  6. When Aberdeen's coalition fell in 1855 over its handling of the Crimean War, Palmerston was the only man able to sustain a majority in Parliament, and he became prime minister. He had two periods in office, 1855–1858 and 1859–1865, before his death at the age of 80 years, a few months after victory in a general election in which he had obtained an increased majority.
