Henry Clinton was born on April 16, 1730, in Newfoundland, Canada. In 1778, Clinton became General in charge of all the British army in America. He decided to fight mostly near the Atlantic Ocean. He took troops out of Philadelphia and sent them to New York instead. Most of the battles in the later part of the war were in the South, but Clinton stayed in New York and fought in the Hudson Valley.

Sir Henry Clinton was appointed second in command to the small British-Hanoverian army that served as a defence force for the newly liberated Netherlands under the command of the hereditary Prince of Orange in August 1814.

After helping to break the Siege of Boston, Clinton was sent south in 1776 to lead an ill-fated invasion of North Carolina and then Charleston. However, he bounced back with battle successes on Long Island and in New York City. Getting passed over for command of a campaign against the New York State capital turned into a good thing for him.
