Catherine was the daughter of Thomas Pegge of Yeldersley, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, and wife Catherine Kniveton, daughter of Sir Gilbert Kniveton, Baronet, and wife. Thomas and his family were exiled to Bruges during the English Civil War following his capture serving under the Royalist Colonel General Henry Hastings, 1st Baron Loughborough .

Education He was educated abroad, probably in Spain and he was known by the nickname of "Don Carlos". Career He had a sister called Catherine FitzCharles who became a nun.
The family crypt is there. That family is the root of the Pegges of Beauchief Abbey and the Catherine Pegge who had two children by Charles II. There are other lines which stayed in the Leicester/Nottingham/Derby area, and one group in North Norfolk back to the 1500's. I recently found one solitary John Pegg in Burgh, Cumberland in 1336.

There is reliable evidence that her mother was Catherine Pegge, daughter of Thomas Pegge of Yeldersley, Derbs, and Catherine Kniveton. Catherine was a former mistress of Charles II, by whom she had a son. She was Sir Edward's fourth wife. Her father died in 1676, aged 72,in Flanders.
