Mary was born in 1540, being the third and last of the children of Henry FitzAlan, 12th Earl of Arundel by his first wife, Katherine Grey. Her older siblings were Jane, born 1537 and Henry, Lord Maltravers, born 1538. Her paternal grandparents were William FitzAlan, 11th Earl of Arundel and his second wife Anne Percy.

Philip Howard, 13th Earl of Arundel (28 June 1557 – 19 October 1595) was an English nobleman. He was canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1970, as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales . Howard lived mainly during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I ; he was charged with being a Catholic , quitting England without leave, and sharing in Jesuit plots.

Alethea Talbot. Henry Frederick Howard, 15th Earl of Arundel PC (Ire) (15 August 1608 – 17 April 1652), styled Lord Maltravers until 1640, and Baron Mowbray from 1640 until 1652, was an English nobleman, chiefly remembered for his role in the development of the rule against perpetuities .
The Earl also had two daughters, Jane, who was married to Lord Lumley, and Mary. Mary married Thomas Howard, 4 th Duke of Norfolk but died in 1557 after giving birth to a son, Phillip. This meant that Philip became the heir of the 12th Earl Arundel. This is how the Fitzalan Earls of Arundel became linked with the Howard Dukes of Norfolk.
