The third son of John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll, John Douglas succeeded his brother, George William (6th Duke), as 7th Duke of Argyll in 1839. He married firstly on 3 August 1802 to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of William Campbell of Fairfield.
In 1706 John Campbell, second Duke of Argyll, became the inhabitant of a house on the east side of King Street, St James (Soho end), Westminster, London which stood on a site occupied by the western end of Little Argyll Street which in 1735 or 1736 he vacated for redevelopment.
Niall Diarmid Campbell was the only son of Captain Lord Archibald Campbell, second son of George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll, and his wife Janey Sevilla Callander of Craigforth and Ardkinglas, daughter of James Henry Callander. His uncle was John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, and his aunt by marriage was Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, 4th dau. of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
