Hace unos meses su hijo anunció que padecía Alzheimer, pero el motivo de su muerte ha sido un ataque al corazón mientras se encontraba en un hospital de El Cairo. Sharif debutó como actor a los 22 años con un pequeño papel en la cinta ' Shaytan al-Sahra ' en 1954.
