He served in the army for forty years in the Mexican-American War, the American Civil War, the Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontier.

Winfield Scott Hancock was an American soldier and politician. Hancock and his twin brother were born in Montgomery Square, Pennsylvania on February 14th, 1824. After attending public schools, in 1840, Hancock received a nomination to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated 18th of his 25 member class.
