He was the first acknowledged “leader of the opposition” in Parliament and repeatedly argued in favour of the preservation of individual liberties at a time when Britain was frequently at war and there were many concerns about treasonous plots.

Up to the end of the 1780s, the prominence of Charles Fox in England owed as much to his position in society as to politics. He was a leading figure at Brooks's and Newmarket as well as Westminster. Fox enjoyed and encouraged friendships more than most men. Foxite politics was often an extension of friendship.
