The Princely House Order of Hohenzollern originated in 1841, by joint decree of Prince Konstantin of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. These two principalities in southern Germany were Catholic collateral lines of the House of Hohenzollern, cousins to the Protestant ruling house of Prussia.

Karl, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (Karl Anton Friedrich Meinrad Fidelis; 20 February 1785 – 11 March 1853) was the reigning Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen from 1831 till 1848. First marriage . On 4 February 1808, he married Marie Antoinette Murat, daughter of Pierre Murat (1748-1792), elder brother of Joachim Murat, King of Naples.
This so-called "Hohenzollern candidacy" for the Spanish throne was one of the main factors in instigating the Franco-Prussian War. Prince Karl Anton was married to Josephine Friederike Luise, Princess of Baden (1813–1900), daughter of Grand Duke Charles of Baden. They had six children. Karl Anton died on 2 June 1885, aged 73, in Berlin.
