Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Sophia Charlotte; 19 May 1744 – 17 November 1818) was Queen of Great Britain and Ireland as the wife of King George III from their marriage on 8 September 1761 until her death in 1818. Prince Alfred (1780–1782) was the fourteenth child and ninth and youngest son of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland and his queen consort, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The prince was baptised by Frederick Cornwallis , the Archbishop of Canterbury , in the Great Council Chamber at St James's Palace on 21 October 1780.

In 1782, Alfred, who had never enjoyed robust health, became unwell after his inoculation against the smallpox virus.
