Mary, Queen of Scots (born 8 December 1542). James V died on 14 December, six days after his daughter Mary's birth. Mary of Guise then engaged in a power struggle with James Hamilton, 3d Earl of Arran (circa 1517-75), who had been appointed regent for the infant queen. In 1548 she arranged her daughter's betrothal to the French Dauphin.
