Biografía. Rosalind nació en Mayfair , Londres el 11 de agosto de 1921, el mayor de tres hijos del Honorable Roland Calvert Cubitt (1899-1962) y su esposa Sonia Rosemary Cubitt (de soltera Keppel; 1900-1986). Su padre era hijo de Henry Cubitt, segundo barón Ashcombe, quien se convirtió en el tercer barón Ashcombe después de su muerte.
Shand era hijo del comandante Bruce Shand y su esposa, Rosalind Maud Cubitt, hija del III Barón Ashcombe y Sonia Keppel.
