Balliol's graduate housing is located around the college's Graduate Centre at Holywell Manor, some ten minutes' walk from the main college site in Broad Street. It consists of Holywell Manor itself, which dates from 1516 (including James Fairfax Yard, an annexe attached to the Manor), some rooms at Jowett Walk, and four new accommodation blocks at the Master’s Field, completed in 2021.
The College was founded by John de Balliol in 1263, and was consolidated by the latter’s widow, Dervorguilla of Galloway in 1282. De Balliol was the head of a family which had been prominent land-owners in England and France for several generations. 10 de jul. de 1997 · Balliol College has existed as a community of scholars on its present site without interruption since about 1263. By this token it is the oldest College in Oxford or Cambridge. Balliol men were prominent in the collection of humanist literature in the fifteenth century, and the College was notorious in the century after that for adherence to Rome.

Though most of its buildings are, in fact, Victorian, its founders were at the core of medieval Britain, parents of a king of Scotland (King John Balliol reigned from 1292-96) and the subjects of an old, if somewhat gruesome, romantic tale.

The College was not founded by the John Balliol who was King of Scots 1292-1296, but by his father John Balliol, and was consolidated by the latter's widow Dervorguilla of Galloway.
