Benny Goodman nació el 30 de mayo de 1909 en Chicago (Estados Unidos). Fue el noveno de doce hermanos, hijo de emigrantes judíos procedentes de Polonia. Cuando contaba diez años de edad inició sus estudios de clarinete y durante los cuatro siguientes actuó con diversos conjuntos locales de baile.
