10 de ago. de 2014 · The sitter has been linked tentatively to Frances Brandon, Duchess of Suffolk. A portrait at Petworth (see Collins Baker, 'Catalogue of the Petworth Collection of Pictures', 1920) appears to represent the same woman on a larger scale and is inscribed with the date 1560 and the sitter's age (24).
Frances grew up familiar with court life, as Charles Brandon was the closest companion of Henry VIII, and the king's sister was familiar with his queen, Catherine of Aragon. The Princess Mary was only a year older, and the two girls developed a lasting friendship, interrupted when the king decided to divorce Catherine and the child Mary was sent away from court and declared a bastard.
Frances was born at Hatfield on July 16, 1517. In the spring of 1533, Frances married Henry Grey, Marquis of Dorset. Born on January 17, 1517, Henry was just a few months older than his new bride.
