Field marshal is the highest military rank of the British Army. It is considered a five-star rank, immediately above the rank of General, and is the army equivalent of an Admiral of the Fleet and a Marshal of the Royal Air Force. On appointment, a Field Marshal is presented with a gold-tipped baton which he carries on ceremonial occasions.
