Biographie La princesse Marie vers 1874. Marie est l'aînée de sa famille et la seule fille du prince Alexandre de Hesse-Darmstadt (1823-1888), fondateur de la Maison de Battenberg et de son épouse morganatique, la comtesse Julia von Hauke (1825-1895), fille du général-comte polonais Jean-Maurice Hauke et titrée princesse de Battenberg à l'occasion de son mariage.
He was the eldest son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine, and Countess Julia Hauke. As his parents’ marriage was morganatic, Louis and his siblings took their titles from their mother, who had been created Countess of Battenberg (later elevated to Princess of Battenberg in 1858). Louis had four siblings:
Julia's father had fought in Napoleon's Polish Legions in Austria, Italy, Germany and the Peninsular War. After his service in the Polish army since 1790 and the army of the Duchy of Warsaw from 1809 to 1814, he entered the ranks of the army of Congress Poland , became a full-fledged general in 1828 and was awarded a Polish title of nobility.
