Davis wrote: 'The agricultural pursuits of the inhabitants of every county or district are directed, in the first place, to supply their own wants, and next, to enable themselves to purchase those necessaries which they cannot raise, by sale of those of which they have a surplus.' This statement became less applicable as the 19th century progressed.

It was established as a haven for the Huguenots and was destroyed by the Spanish in 1565. Later French arrived from the north.
