Edward's wartime experiences during the Crécy campaign (1346–7) seem to have been a determining factor in his abandonment of the Round Table project.

His assumption of the magisterium followed that of the two interim rectors, and his role in the Order before that time is unknown; his first official act was recorded on 9 December 1124.
