She was born in 1778 as the daughter of Francis, the future Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Countess Augusta Reuss of Ebersdorf. On 23 February 1804, she married Emmanuel, Count of Mensdorff-Pouilly and they had six sons together, though not all lived to adulthood.

Leopold I, King of the Belgians swore allegiance to the new Constitution of Belgium on July 21, 1831, and became the first King of the Belgians.
