(fn. 188) On Gloucester Abbey's manor, the demesne of which was farmed by 1526, the rents of the free and customary tenants were valued in 1535 at £4 19 s . 7½ d.

The most important potential development was the scheme for a canal to carry seagoing vessels past the most difficult stretch of the Severn.

The church at Churcham was recorded from 1100 when the Bishop of Hereford gave Gloucester Abbey leave to appropriate it; a chapel of ease at Bulley then belonged to it (fn. 1) and Bulley has remained a chapelry to Churcham. A vicar's portion had been assigned by the early 13th century (fn. 2) and the living has remained a vicarage.
