This "Last Temptation of Christ" is a great reference by Richard Kelly, the director of "Donnie Darko", considering the two movie's obvious parallels.
Donnie reacts and then there’s a time jump visual effect and then Donnie says he’s “time traveling.” What sets Donnie off? Donnie becomes deeply triggered by Cunningham after this moment. Donnie doesn’t know yet what Cunningham really is, and yet he reacts super strongly, even calling him the “antichrist.”
