Alfred Waterhouse was born into a strictly Quaker family in Aigburth, Liverpool, Lancashire, England on 19 July 1830 and was articled to the architectural partnership of P. B. Alley and Richard Lane (1795-1880) in Manchester in 1848 Having completed his apprenticeship in 1853 he spent ten-months touring France and Germany.
Alfred Waterhouse (19 July 1830 – 22 August 1905) was an English architect, particularly associated with the Victorian Gothic revival. He is perhaps best known for his design for Manchester Town Hall and the Natural History Museum in London , although he also built a wide variety of other buildings throughout the country.
