College Overview. The University of Michigan as we know it started with LSA. In 1841, the university held its first classes in Ann Arbor with a handful of students, featuring a curriculum rooted in literature, science, and the arts—a revolutionary approach that viewed the world through many lenses instead of just one.
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts has been a world leader in research and delivering an extraordinary liberal arts and sciences education for more than 175 years. Our faculty are on the frontlines of new ideas and pioneering research across every discipline.
Started in 1841 with seven students and two teachers, the college is now the largest part at U-M in terms of the number of students. It is located on the university's Central Campus, which is shared with the Ross School of Business , the School of Information , the UM Law School , and other units.
