Maria Cassavetti Zambaco, who became an artist and model, was the daughter of a wealthy Greek merchant, Demetrios Cassavetti. Maria moved in the same artistic circle as her two cousins; Marie Spartali Stillman and Aglaia Ionides, upon inheriting her father’s immense fortune, in 1858, she became much more independent than most women of Victorian Britain.
