He followed this up with elected offices in both houses of Tennessee’s legislature. All in all, he spent about 10 years in the U.S. House of Representatives before moving to the U.S. Senate.

Andrew Johnson ran away from his apprenticeship as a teenager. With a reward on his head, he traveled throughout the South honing his trade. He eventually returned to Raleigh, NC for his mother and step-father. They settled in Greeneville, TN, where Andrew opened his own shop and married a local girl, Eliza McCardle.
Biografie. Andrew Johnson werd geboren in Raleigh (North Carolina) en was autodidact. Hij verhuisde in 1826 naar Tennessee, waar hij werkzaam was als kleermaker. Hij was wethouder in Greeneville van 1828 tot 1830 en van 1834 tot 1838 burgemeester. Van 1835 tot 1837 en van 1839 tot 1841 was hij lid van het Huis van Afgevaardigden van Tennessee.
