In 1853, aged 46, Jane had just emerged from a tempestuous relationship with a Greek war hero, Xristos Hadji-Petros. She had borne six children, three of whom had died young, and three of whom were being raised by their paternal families.

For the rest of her life, her mother preferred to be called by her previous title of Lady Andover, despite her apparent happy marriage to Jane's father.
