Shawn Colvin wuchs in Carbondale im US-amerikanischen Bundesstaat Illinois auf und studierte später auch an der Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Bereits im Alter von zehn Jahren begann sie Gitarre zu spielen. Ihr erstes öffentliches Konzert gab sie mit 15 Jahren auf dem Campus der University of Illinois.
