Rupprecht even reffered to Hitler as insane when meeting king George V of Britain in 1934. He was eventually exiled from Germany in 1939 when hitler gave up on trying to sway the prince to his side. Rupprecht's family would bear the brunt of his defiance when they were capture and put in concentration camps while Rupprecht himself was stuck in Italy.

What concerned Prince Rupprecht was to ensure that, while fighting for the German cause, Bavarian identity was preserved and respected—it was an aspect of his duty as heir to the Bavarian crown.

Commanding more than a million men as a General, and then Field Marshal, in the Imperial German Army, he held off the attacks of the British Expeditionary Force under Sir John French and then Sir Douglas Haig for four long years.
