In the early eighteenth century the castle belonged to Éléonore Desmier d'Olbreuse, daughter of Alexandre Desmier of Olbreuse (1608–1660). It was then, in 1702, that Louis XIV put the castle into receivership to punish its owner for aiding Protestants.

Éléonore Desmier d'Olbreuse ( Niort, 3 gennaio 1639 – Castello di Celle, 5 febbraio 1722) fu la moglie di Giorgio Guglielmo, duca di Brunswick-Lüneburg, e nonna di Giorgio II di Gran Bretagna; fu inoltre la bisnonna di Federico il Grande. Fu Contessa di Wilhelmsburg dal 1674 e Duchessa di Brunswick-Lüneburg dal 1676.
