Born to a pioneering family in Upstate New York in the late 1800s, Allene Tew was beautiful, impetuous, and frustrated by the confines of her small hometown. At eighteen, she met Tod Hostetter at a local dance, having no idea that the mercurial charmer she would impulsively wed was heir to one of the wealthiest families in America.
On 10 April 1929, he married the wealthy American Allene Tew in Paris, France. She was a widow of Anson Wood Burchard (vice-chairman of General Electric). They were divorced on 31 October 1935. Her divorce from the prince was said to have been caused by his espousal of the Nazi cause.
