18 de oct. de 2011 · Alexander Forrester Inglis Cochrane, naval officer (b at Scotland 23 Apr 1758; d at Paris, France 26 Jan 1832). A career naval officer whose boldness, skill and success in many campaigns led him to the highest echelons of naval service, Alexander Cochrane is best remembered in Canada for his commanding presence during the War of 1812.
British Vice Adm. Alexander Cochrane's fleet arrives near Ship Island, some 60 miles east of New Orleans, on December 8. After disposing of an American flotilla on Lake Borgne, Cochrane and the temporary army commander, Maj. Gen. John Keane, decide to ferry the British infantry through the nearby bayous and approach the city from the south.

Then there was Douglas Cochrane, later General the 12th Earl, who fought hand to hand with Dervish warriors when they broke into a British 'square' during the Gordon Relief Expedition; whose mounted troops, 'Dundonald's Cavalry', became a by-word for their elan in South Africa during the Boer War; and who galloped with Lieutenant Churchill into Ladysmith to relive that beleaguered town.
