Her father Constant d’Aubigné was a career criminal who had received jail terms for murder, kidnapping, treason, and debt. Disowned by his father Agrippa d’Aubigné, a prominent Huguenot military officer and poet, Constant d’Aubigné had married Jeanne de Cardhilac, daughter of Niort’s prison warden, in 1627.

Agrippa d'Aubigné évoque, en effet, ce projet, mais affirme y avoir renoncé ", et il le motive tout autrement : il voulait «garantir sa personne des puantes actions de son proche»1*. Constant avait, en effet, trahi la confiance du roi d'Angleterre, et joué, pour ainsi dire, le rôle d'espion pour le service de Louis XIII.
