He was the only son of Arthur Saunders William Charles Fox Gore, 5th Earl of Arran, and Lady Edith Elizabeth Henrietta (nee Jocelyn). He was therefore, through his maternal line, the grandson of Robert Viscount Jocelyn, 3rd Earl of Roden of Hyde Hall, Sawbridgeworth.
