In Dec., 1648, acting on the orders of the army council, he carried out Pride's Purge, expelling from Parliament 143 members (mostly Presbyterians) on the ground that they were royalist sympathizers.

His exact date of birth is unknown but he was apprenticed to a City of London merchant in January 1622 and since the normal age for this was between 14 and 17 years old, he was probably born between 1606 and 1608. (5) At the Restoration his property was confiscated by the Crown and he was posthumously declared a traitor.
