Fitzhugh Lee, nicknamed "Fitz," descended from the distinguished lineage of the Virginia Lee's: He was the grandson of Henry "Light-Horse Harry" and nephew of General Robert E. After graduating from West Point, Fitz served in the U.S. Army until the Civil War broke out, when he joined the Confederate cavalry forces.

Following the explosion on the Maine, Lee returned to Washington. On May 5, 1898 he was made a major general in the army and put in command of the Seventh Army Corps. Although the unit trained thoroughly in Jacksonville, Florida, it never saw combat. In January 1899 Lee and his troops went to Havana to establish order there.
Gen. Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905)—was the son of Sidney Smith Lee (1802-1869) and nephew of Gen. Robert E. Lee. In 1861 Fitz Lee joined the Confederate cavalry as a lieutenant and fought at the First Battle of Manassas. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel later in 1861 and to brigadier general in 1862.
