His parents were English, and his mother insisted that he be educated in English schools. Young Milner distinguished himself at King's College School, London, and at Balliol College, Oxford.

Alfred, Viscount Milner (1854-1925) was educated in Germany and at King's College, London and Balliol College, Oxford. He was elected to a fellowship at New College, Oxford in 1876, moved to London in 1879 and was called to the Bar in 1881. He turned to journalism to earn his living and worked with W.T. Stead on the staff of the Pall Mall Gazette.
Winston Churchill (1874-1965) and Alfred Milner (1854-1925) are both from the Victorian Era of England, although Milner was a generation older than Churchill. Milner graduated from Oxford University with a law degree in 1879, and Churchill graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst , as a commissioned officer, in 1894.
