Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham is perhaps best known as the mother of the royal favourite George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. She was the daughter of Anthony Beaumont of Glenfield, Leicestershire, a direct descendant of Henry de Beaumont, and his wife Anne Armstrong, daughter of Thomas Armstrong of Corby.
Like her son the Duke, Mary was a target for libels and scurrilous ballads, and it was rumoured that she had taken the Bishop of Lincoln as her lover. In 1625 Mary and her son Buckingham were implicated in poisoning King James, becoming increasingly hated and vilified, and Buckingham was assassinated three years later.

Mary Villiers (before 30 March 1622 – November 1685), married firstly Charles Herbert, Lord Herbert; secondly James Stewart, 1st Duke of Richmond and thirdly Colonel Thomas Howard. Charles Villiers, Earl of Coventry (17 November 1625 – 16 March 1627), died in infancy. George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham (30 January 1628 – 16 April 1687).
