John succeeded his father in 1770, became the first President of the Highland Society of Scotland and married a celebrated beauty, Elizabeth Gunning, widow of the sixth Duke of Hamilton, in 1759. Both Duke and Duchess were subscribers to Robert Burns' Poems.
