Talbot was the only son of Francis Talbot, 5th Earl of Shrewsbury and Mary Dacre. In early life he saw active military service, when he took part in the invasion of Scotland under the Protector Somerset. He was sent by his father in October 1557 to the relief of Thomas Percy, 7th Earl of Northumberland pent up in Alnwick Castle.

Francis Talbot, 5th Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford KG (1500 – 25 September 1560) was the son of George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury and Anne Hastings. His maternal grandparents were William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings and Katherine Neville.
Francis Talbot, 11th Earl of Shrewsbury, 11th Earl of Waterford (1623 – 16 March 1668), was an English peer who was a Royalist officer in the English Civil War. He survived the war only to be mortally wounded in a duel with the Duke of Buckingham who was having an affair with his wife.
