Pirandello se licenció en Filología Románica en 1891. Pirandello regresó a Roma y se relacionó con un círculo literario formado por periodistas y escritores, entre ellos Luigi Capuana. Éste animó a Pirandello a escribir, y en 1893 Pirandello empezó a escribir Marta Ajala (1901) y publicó su primera colección de relatos cortos, Amori senza Amore, en 1894.

Es el autor teatral italiano más importante del periodo de entreguerras, y uno de los de mayor influencia en el teatro del s. XX. Estudió Filosofía y Letras en las universidades de Palermo, Roma y Bonn.
