Sir Peter Lely was an English painter of Dutch descent best known for his portraits of British royalty and politicians including Oliver Cromwell. Born Pieter van der Faes to Dutch parents on September 14, 1618 in Soest, Westphalia (now Germany), Lely studied painting in Haarlem, Netherlands, where it is thought he apprenticed for the painter Pieter de Grebber.

Dal 1640, anno del suo arrivo a Londra, alla morte, fu il pittore più ricercato e noto di tutto il regno d'Inghilterra, successore nel ruolo di ritrattista di Antoon van Dyck.
